Blind Date or Interview?

Why emotional hiring can lead to disaster and how to avoid it!

If you've ever interviewed someone, it can often seem more like a first date instead of a screening step. You might feel nervous about how the candidate will perceive you or be confused about what questions to ask. You could get a great feeling about a person, only to learn a few weeks into the job that they are not who they seemed to be. Considering all the time loss and stress that goes into firing a new employee, you can feel trapped in a situation that is causing you more trouble than before you added them to your team!

The fact is, nobody teaches small business owners how to screen candidates well and it often comes only through a lot of trial and error that an entrepreneur will start to find their footing. But I'll let you in on my philosophy of hiring to help eliminate a lot of headache and it comes down to this- hire with your head first and your heart second.

Hiring someone based on how you feel (EMOTIONS) rather than what skills you need (FACTS) will always come back to haunt you in the end. So how can you stay in the right headspace when hiring without betraying your heart? Screen for competency first and connection second.

I'm not saying you can't like your employees. You should enjoy the people you hire! The real trick is to have a screening process to eliminate your own personal emotional bias when interviewing and then allow the feelings to enter once you are confident your crop of candidates are all on a level playing field of competency. Then, once you have a few solid options, let all the feelings into the process!

Not sure how to do that yourself? I've got you covered!

I have created a thorough candidate screening form that you can use again and again! It offers step-by-step instructions on crafting your own unique candidate screening process and it does the hard work for you with a simple, editable template you can change to fit your needs.

Not swimming in applicants to screen, but still want a little help on how to interview better and with confidence? Download my interview question template, complete with questions to ask for standard job interview and tips on each question about what you are asking and why you are asking it so you can screen like a professional!

Don't regret your hires! Use my tools to eliminate your nerves and feel confident with your decisions.
